At entry level A/V receivers thers not too much of a difference in sound quality. hence factors like ease of usage, DSP options. speker output control (Capability to time sync and boost outputs for individual speakers) also cost of support & warranty in India would be more important !

You may want to try marantz, Yamaha and Onkyo as well top see what works for you.
BTW, What speakers are you driving ? and what is the size of the room ?
Do try to check if the amp has enough juice to run it.

My plan is to add on matching speakers later. I have a small living room area - about 200 sq feet.

Currently I have a pair of old Bolton 2 way floor standers which I intend to hook up for stereo listening.

For Home Theatre - I have a rather rudimentary set up currently which involves hooking up my AEGO2 sub sat system (its an active subwoofer with four channels of amplification - FL,FR,Centre and subwoofer)directly to my DVD player. Since there are only two satellites - I use my Philips TV surround speaker (16 ohms) for my centre channel. Next, I use an old Panasonic 2-in-1 as an amp to power the detachable speakers(4 ohms)as my rear surrounds!

So what I intend to do is either get a good centre-surround speaker package which matches my AEGO 2 to make a 5.1 surround package OR get all five(or six)new speakers and a sub woofer and connect it with the Denon 1604. I could use my Bolton speakers as B speaker set up for pure stereo.

Its not a good idea to have a mix of 8 and 16 ohms speakers for the front+centre and 4 ohms for the rear connected to the AV amp..right?

well, the impedance does not matter, but the sensitivity of the speaker does.

eg if your front is rated 90 db and center is rated 87 db, the center would need double the power required by the fronts. hence the dialogues might be muted.

even if your receiver does have individual channel contreol, you will still have an audible difference in volumes everytime you change the volume setting.

one option could be to get the same brand of fronts & center and use the Aegos as surround..

even the wharfedale diamonds make quie good HT setups

As far as your choice is concerned i would suggest you to go in for SONODYNE or ONKYO as DENON is too pricey and rare(remember when you have to service it there are not too many around). So far as the performance is concerned i feel you better go in for matching speakers for the system to obtain the best. Never drive diffrent impedance rating speakers in to your amp.
