Am trying to integrate a sub into my setup for thz past 2 days. Have managed to get the crossover, phase and gain levels and position right.
results are pretty impressive now, but need to do some final tuneups as it is almost in the stage of "Know it is not there untill switched off stage)

After spending the last 4 hours with an SPL meter plotting graphs, now want to test out the
Timing, dynamics and the low end clarity.

I have used
1. Soundtrack from the league of Xtraordinary gentlemen
2. Eagles( hell freeze over)- hotel california
3. Peter Gabriel (Passions)- the feeling begins
4. Sade (Love deluxe) - no ordinary love
5. Mussogorsky (Pictures..) - Gnomus

Any more ideas from you folks ? the Phase difference and position may need some more adjustments... this is tiring work

Set Up Details ?

Main Speakers ?

Sub Woofer ?

X-Over Frequency ?

Tracks that you could use :-

Manger Test Disc - Last Track
Burmester Test Disc - Chinese Drums [last track]
Pictures @ an Exhibition [Gates of Keiv]
Cammile Saint Sean [Spelling Mistake] - Symphony # 03, 1st & last movement
Gustav Malher Sym # 2 [Ressunection]
Dire Straits [Heavy Fuel & Calling Elvis]
{do not use Shangrilla, the 'bass' is bloated}
Yello - Best Of [Jungle Bill & Race]

The basic problem is in the 50 Hz to 80 Hz
[That I am sure you have already figured out]

But play around & you should manage in a few hours or days.

Call some 'audiophile' friend of yours over to help you, his comments / suggestions might just be helpful.

Thanks for the tracks Bob_ludwig,
I have the gates at Kiev, and On every street. am in the middle of a marathon sitting of going thru some of my music..

Regarding Chinese drums forgot I had an album with just that.. so That and the best of KODO are definitely on

I do have a Bass bump at 40-50 and a suckout at 125. am trying some corner dampners to see if it helps but it is clearely due to the room

Speaker response 55-20 at 1.5dB
Sub does around 18-120, Corner placement
Crossover at 42 Hz.
Phase at around 30°

Regarding calling someone else; that will take the fun out of it !

My setup details are in my profile..

BTW Am awaiting for my copy of CARA to simulate the room.

for bass timing...I usually play the last track of the robbie williams Swing when yor winning album(studio recording)..."beyong the sea". Always shows up a bad timing speaker.
Secondly I usually use any big-band swing music.
When the rhythm section is not in tune with the rest of the band, you'll know....

play a few ray brown cds to see if your bass in the lower registers is clear and articulate. Any trio/quartet with a double bass would give you an idea.

Hello manek !
yeah how could i forget RB. have tried out bye bye blackbird and Tanga and the double bass is imaging as well as ;oving air now. had to convert the sub to a front firing and place it right at the corner. now it is subtle but has that bite when required.

I do not have any Robbie williams will try to donload a copy to test it out. BTW is it from finding Nemo ?

just dicovered that i have a composition called Baba Yaga by Liodov with some amazing bass content which is very dynamic and the setup seems to take it well.

Try these.

1.Burmeister CD - Poem of Chinese Drums
2.Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick
3.Cream – Do what you like (Ginger Baker solo)
4.M R. Rehman compositions (careful selection needed –some track are bloated)
5.Dil Chahta Hai - There is one track, which can eat any subwoofer.

The second and third tracks are excellent not only for testing low level slam, but also overall dynamics, air and finesse of any speaker system,

Could you describe how you have setup you testing jig. One software that comes to mind right away is Praxis. Do give a try if you haven’t already.

I have bought CARA http://www.cara.de/ENU/index.html

seems to be well revieved and do know an audiophile who recommended it.

Speakers are Now as below :

-40 cm from back wall,
Right one is 1 m from the right wall and the left one around 2 M from the left wall (WHich also happens to have a door).

-Toed in at around 20 deg and 2 M apart

-I sit 2 M perpendicular to them, ears at around 1 m unfortunately have the back wall right behind my ears. The SPL meter is on a tripod almost where I sit

Sub is now converted to a forward firing one, in the corner just behind the Right speaker . Crossover at 45Hz and phase at 180 firing diagonally.

Ill try to post a pic once i start with the simulation

Unfortunately do not have any of th above tracks (Most of my cds are in INdia ..just have bought around 50 of those in an uncompressed format in my iPOd but i think I should buy the burmester cd anyway !

Got my ETS software. was able to model my loudspeaker and sub and draw out my room.

Have not done the positional optimisation yet, but did a soundfield analysis. pretty interesting.

The model is giving me the 56 Hz Bump as well as the 125 Hz suckout which I go from the SPL meter measurements as well !
Interestingly it creates a "Movie" of the frequency response across frequencies ! am putting two snapshots at 50 and 125 below as linked thumbnails

B1 & B2 are the speakers and B3 the sub. L is the listener

50 Hz

127 hz

I am pretty amazed by this now. have to find time to do the positional optimisation tonight !

Room is as below

I had a look at the Praxis sofware site. seems too sophisticated for me

But you might find these reviews on Cara interesting

http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue8/cara.htm

Could not locate the stereophile review but that was less detailed.

yes arj...thats the track in our favourite movei "Finding Nemo"

Malhar 2nd sym, especially the first movent is great for bass quality of the speaker as well but for bass timing I use old swing big band numbers. Another track which is usefull for bass timing is a big band/orchestra playing the track "Summerplace". Its a beaut as well. If you have a Percy Faith CD, you may find it on that.

OK , I get it. CARA is a simulation software whereas Praxis is a fully featured T&M utility.

Praxis appears daunting at first but once you have figured out the user interface, its quite easy to use. You still need several sessions to ‘calibrate’ the system. Praxis user interface is quite chaotic, but it’s a very competent s/w.
