Vizepräsident Lee Chang-hee antwortete auf eine Frage zum Zeitpunkt der Kommerzialisierung beim K-Display Biz Forum am 13.:
„Das ist noch nicht entschieden.“

Samsung Display gab bekannt, dass „die Effizienz und Lebensdauer von hocheffizienten blauen organischen Leuchtdioden (OLED)-Geräten kürzlich verbessert wurden.“

Lee Chang-hee, Vizepräsident und Leiter des Samsung Display Research Institute, sagte dies während einer Grundsatzrede und einer Frage-und-Antwort-Runde mit Reportern beim K-Display Business Forum, das am 13. im COEX in Seoul stattfand.

Unter den drei Grundfarben des Lichts in derzeit kommerzialisierten OLEDs, Rot (R), Grün (G) und Blau (B), verwenden die roten und grünen Elemente phosphoreszierende Elemente mit einer internen Lumineszenzeffizienz von 100 %, während das blaue Element ein fluoreszierendes Element mit einer internen Lumineszenzeffizienz von nur 25 % verwendet. Samsung Display und UDC entwickeln in den USA hocheffiziente Elemente, die die bestehenden fluoreszierenden blauen OLED-Elemente ersetzen können, aber die Fortschritte sind langsam.

Vizepräsident Lee Chang-hee erklärte: „Wir entwickeln Dotierstoffe, die sowohl die Phosphoreszenzmethode als auch die Methode der thermisch aktivierten verzögerten Fluoreszenz (TADF) verwenden“ in Bezug auf das hocheffiziente blaue OLED-Gerät, das Samsung Display derzeit entwickelt. Er fügte hinzu: „Wir haben an der Kommerzialisierung des blauen OLED-Geräts mit der TADF-Methode geforscht und seine Effizienz und Lebensdauer haben sich in letzter Zeit stark verbessert“ und „Wir entwickeln eine Struktur, die die Effizienz weiter steigern kann.“ Auf die Frage von Reportern, wann das hocheffiziente blaue OLED kommerzialisiert wird, antwortete Vizepräsident Lee: „Das ist noch nicht entschieden.“

UDC, das zusammen mit Samsung Display hocheffiziente blaue OLED-Geräte entwickelt hat, gab in seiner Gewinnmitteilung für das zweite Quartal am 1. (Ortszeit) bekannt, dass „mehr Zeit benötigt wird, um blau phosphoreszierende OLED-Geräte zu kommerzialisieren.“

UDC wiederholt seit Anfang 2022 seine Position, dass „das Ziel darin besteht, blau phosphoreszierende OLEDs bis 2024 zu kommerzialisieren“. Bei einer Veranstaltung des Marktforschungsunternehmens UBI Research im März in Seoul sagte UDC-Vizepräsident Mike Hack außerdem: „Wir planen, die Vorbereitungen für die Kommerzialisierung blau phosphoreszierender OLED-Geräte bis Ende 2024 abzuschließen.“

In der heimischen Displayindustrie gibt es seit Anfang dieses Jahres Beobachtungen, dass die Entwicklung blau phosphoreszierender OLED-Geräte bei UDC nicht wie geplant voranschreitet. UDC, das wiederholt erklärt hat, dass es „die Vorbereitungen für die Massenproduktion bis Ende 2024 abschließen“ wird, hat nun zugegeben, dass eine Entwicklungsverzögerung unvermeidlich ist.

An diesem Tag gab Vizepräsident Lee Chang-hee bekannt, dass sich die Effizienz und Lebensdauer von blauen OLED-Geräten vom Typ TADF in letzter Zeit verbessert haben. Da UDC jedoch seine Position geändert hat, dass für die Entwicklung von blauen OLED-Geräten vom Typ Phosphoreszenz mehr Zeit erforderlich ist, wird die Massenproduktion von hocheffizienten blauen OLED-Geräten voraussichtlich mindestens bis zum nächsten Jahr dauern. Selbst wenn es bei der Technologieentwicklung erhebliche Fortschritte gibt, muss die Zuverlässigkeit überprüft werden, bevor die Massenproduktion eingesetzt werden kann.

Im Jahr 2022 erwarb Samsung Display 147 US-Patente im Zusammenhang mit OLEDs vom deutschen Unternehmen Cynora. Cynora ist ein Unternehmen, das zusammen mit dem japanischen Unternehmen Qlux die Entwicklung der TADF-Methodentechnologie vorangetrieben hat.

LGD

LGD’s suite emphasized OLED TVs and transparent OLED signage displays. For TVs, they introduced Meta Tech 2.0 which boosts peak brightness to 3000 nits. The brightness increase can be attributed to optimizing the lens shape to maximize light output along with a luminance optimi- zation algorithm and an image quality algorithm. They also specified color brightness which was increased by 114% to 1500 nits (we interpret color brightness to mean the brightness of R + G + B). They showcased their latest WOLED TV display vs. last year’s QD‑OLED displays and recent MiniLED TVs and it looked very impressive, especially in scenes with significant white images such as white water in the ocean which appeared to be significantly brighter with more details. META 2.0 will be available on 4K at 55”, 65”, 77” and 83” and 8K at 77” and 88” this year.

LGD also showed an early prototype of next year’s technology which would yield 3700 nits by going to a 4‑stack OLED design. They also won the first Circadian Friendly display image quality certification along with certifications for Low Blue Light, Flicker Free and Discomfort Glare Free.

LG Display Develops Blue Phosphorescent OLED Panel with Tandem Structure

According to South Korea’s Etnews, LG Display has successfully developed an OLED panel utilizing blue phosphorescence. While blue phosphorescence offers excellent efficiency, its development has been challenging, and it has not been commercialized until now. This breakthrough is considered a significant advancement in OLED technology.

OLED materials can emit light through either phosphorescence or fluorescence. In theory, phosphorescence can convert nearly 100% of electrical energy into light, whereas fluorescence achieves only about 25%. Until now, OLED panels have used phosphorescent materials for red and green colors, while blue has been implemented using fluorescent materials.

For several years, panel and material companies have been working to apply phosphorescence to blue, but commercialization has been delayed due to the shorter lifespan of blue phosphorescent materials compared to conventional blue fluorescent material. LG Display appears to have overcome this challenge by employing a tandem structure that involves stacking two layers of red, green and blue OLED light-emitting layers, which increases both efficiency and lifespan. Specifically, they used a "hybrid" method that combines fluorescent and phosphorescent materials in tandem structure to achieve a lifespan comparable to existing OLEDs with fluorescent blue materials, while also benefiting from the high efficiency of phosphorescent materials, according to Etnews.

The exact technology used in the first and second blue stacks of the tandem structure remains unclear. The blue stack structure may involve both fluorescence and phosphorescence for each stack, or it could incorporate HF (Hyperfluorescence) technology, as referenced in last week’s keynote at the K-Display business forum by SDC.

Regarding the commercialization timeline, UDC aims to achieve it by the end of 2024, but has recently noted that it might take slightly longer. SDC has not specified an exact production date in its recent announcements. Etnews reported that LGD plans to begin production evaluations this year and is considering product development. This suggests that products featuring blue phosphorescence could be available as early as 2025. The initial applications might include smartwatches, foldable sub-displays and notebooks, although specific details have yet to be confirmed.

If blue phosphorescence is commercialized, power consumption is expected to improve significantly. With the growing demand for on-device AI in modern devices, the need for blue phosphorescent OLEDs is increasing. Consequently, competition among panel manufacturers to release the first OLED product with blue phosphorescence is expected to be intense.
