Moin moin ,

Hi,

I believe we have no wizards or magicians here on the forum but it would require one to positively tell you what's wrong
Of course we could analyze the situation and come up with a couple of qualified guesses.
The amplifier is close to 20 years old. That suggest wear on components like the Speaker Protection Relay, Electrolytic capacitors, Mechanical switches, Bad solderings developing around Power-Transistors used as series-regulators in Power-supply circuits. The relay can be tested by gently tapping it when the fault occurs. If the howling changes in volume or disappears the Relay is at fault. Bad solderings can be found by visually inspecting the printed circuit board.
Mechanical switches may be corroded. (PURE DIRECT, CD DIRECT AMP, INPUT Source Switching)
Do you experience the fault in both channels?
If so, the problem is in a place common to both channels. This still suggests the Relay but also the Power-Supply (Electrolytic Cap's)
Disconnect the PRE-OUT/MAIN-IN plugs at the rear. Connect a CD-player with adjustable output (..and turn the output DOWN!) to the MAIN-IN. Does the problem still exist when you gently turn-up the volume on the CD-player? If Yes, the Output-amp's are defective. (Relay, Cap's) and if No, the Pre-Amp circuits are defective.
When you connect a CD-player to the correct rear-input labelled CD and press the front-panel CD DIRECT AMP button does the problem still show. If yes, all pre-amp circuits including Input-switching and Tone-controls are OK and the fault is in the Output amp's or Power-supply.
The above are general rules and not without exceptions. For example when giving a signal to the MAIN-IN it actually passes a buffer-amplifier IC in this amplifier-construction. This buffer may ALSO be the source of problems.
What I'm saying is, that in my country it takes 4 years to educate yourself to be an electronics technician. Probably you learn a trick or two during that time that can't easily be given to someone without much experience in repairs of electronics. You should have the tools (Osci, DMM, LF-Generator), knowledge of circuits and possibly also the service-manual.
If you PM me with your e-mail address I can help with info on how to get the manual.
Tools and knowledge is up to you

mfg,

Also:

Endposition 4 Ohm.

Dann teste folgendes:
1. Signalquelle an Eingang TUNER oder AUX
a) PURE DIRECT aus
b) PURE DIRECT an

2. Signalquelle an Eingang CD
a) PURE DIRECT & CD DIRECT aus
b) PURE DIRECT an
c) CD DIRECT an

I looked in the service-manual, parts-list, page 45, where it says 1992.
Unfortunately it seems to be wrong. This is the page with a list of carbon-resistors size and corresponding Yamaha partno's. The list itself was generated in 1992, it is NOT the year of manufacture for the AX-592.
The manual I have was modified, probably by some Internet-dealer of service-manuals who removed the original Yamaha front-page, so I can't say exactly how old the amp. is.
I do have the full and original manual for AX-492, of the same series (AX-492, AX-592, AX-892) and the front-page says 1997.7 (July, 1997).
Sorry about the confusion.
