Hi Guys,

I have a modest stereo setup. Marantz PM44SE amp, Marantz CD53 CDP and Wharfedale 9.2. I have a Onkyo 3100 HTiB too. I was using the default speaker wires of Onkyo 3100 for the stereo setup. I was liking the sound. I changed the wires to DAC 14AWG today. The bass has lost its punch and the treble has gone up. There is no way i can control this on my setup.I fear this may result in fatigue. Has my money gone down the drain?

This is perfect example for cable non believers ! Especially for entry level systems :-)

your new dac cables have a different synergie with your system than the previous pair. Give it a patient hearing for a week. Maybe the muddyness or the hump in the bass has been cleaned up so you hear more of the mids and highs. Make sure the +ve lead of the amp is connected to +ve of speaker abd same for -ve.

Or your new cable is bass shy and bright in which case see if you can change it to a more suitable range from dac. You got to hear the cables at home with your system before you buy.

sri, adding on to what manek has mentioned, to test this out, try to ignore the loss in bass and try to make out if you can hear the midrange as well as the bass more clearely. sometimes Bass can have a "bloom" which gives the apparent feeling that it is more full but in the end it is distorted..are drum more clear and tight now ?

unfortunately i have no idea on the cables you have tried so cannot really postulate too much. best idea would be to try a good known cable from someone you know and try and check as to which of the original cables it sounded like..

Well, it could also be a cable burning in issue.
Typically, give it 50 hours to see if it improves.

Alternatively, just go over and buy a pair of Mogami 3103 speaker cable for 2k rupees (350 rupees per meter) from http://www.pace-mediateck.com/ and you are all set. These are one of the best cables I have heard under 20k (branded cables). They are just superb. And at the price they are available, they are almost free of cost. You get the great bass weight, clean-neutral and a tad warm midrange, well extended but not in your face highs and an amazing soundstage ..which goes beyond the speakers.
They would easily compete with cables worth 50k and beat some of them hands down.
