hey guys,
having a slight problem with my newish setup which i hope u can help me out with.
i have a marantz sr4300 a/v and wharfedale 8.2 bookshelves with a philips multi-cd changer. the problem is that in order for me to listen to it at a normal listening level i hv to raise the volume to half the dial of the amp and if i want to hear it at a slightly loud (not too loud) i hv to raise it too almost 75% up. this seems strange to me boz even in my previous stereo - a sony 3in1 type stereo - i didnt hv to raise it beyond the half way mark to listen to it loud! and that was rated at 17wpc! what cld be the problem, bcoz the same goes when i watching movies in the HT mode i hv to raise it way up to hear the dialogs clearly.
also i'm planning to add a subwoofer in a 250sq ft room. since its impossible to get a in-house demo , i wanted to know what you'll think of the psb subzeroi. wld something like that be enough? any other recomendations in that price range??
thnx for your inputs

Does your philips multi cd changer have a variable output ? if so then you need to adjust it.

Can you try connecting another source to your amp and see if it is the amp or the source ? Check your interconnect cables as well.

Does your marantz amp have gain setting ?

Wharfedale 8.2 are decently efficient so there ought to be no problems there !

I think Marantz receivers have a logarithmic volume ie they do not increase much initially but after the 50% mark they start increasing more..do not think it is a problem with your speakers....
Am sure at close to 90% they would be deafening !

What is the power rating per channnel for the receiver ?

Also do note that the current capability in AV amps is much lower hence for the sam "Power rating" volume and clarity is much lower..

the amp is rated at 90wpc@6ohms.

the interconnects seem fine.

my cd changer doesnt have variable volume though i dont think its a problem with that coz even my dvd player plays at similar sound levels.

the amp has gain of +/- 10 and i have it set currently at +3 and my surround spkrs higher (cheap sony ones) so that they match.

what is the funda behind "logarithmic volume" ? hows that diff then normal amps ? is it better?

you are right arj, at 90% they are pretty loud but again not as "loud" as my old sony which at 90% were downright deafening and in fact the sound wld start "splitting". is it safe to go that high on my current setup ? wont the spkrs be at risk, especially if there are sudden peaks in the audio?

thnx once again

90W@6ohms usually means 60W@8ohms.

By logarithmic..it follows the Logritmic curve ie rate of increase of volume is low in the beginning and very high towards the end..something like a fuelmeter in a car :).

Dont compare this with your sony..am sure sound would begin distorting much earlier in the sony (Diffcult to notice with the intrinsic speaker)that too at much higher levels

While your current setup would have much much lower distortion at that volume.

Wharfedales are averagely sensitive speakers hence your setup should be OK..

Also do note the power rating is it 90 W per channel or 90W stere..which would mean 45W@6 per channel and hence 30W per channel for 8ohms....manufacturers do play around with specs a lot !!

thnx arj and manek..

also, i'm planning to upgrade my system with a sub, centre and surrounds. which ones wld u'll reccomend.

for the sub i'm looking at a rs 25k absolute upper limit. i prefer musical and not boomy bass. my foom is arnd 250 sqft.

for the rest i've been told to go with the diamond centre and WH2 surrounds so that there is a matching tonality. any other alternatives u guys reccomend ? a little cheaper, preferably :-)

also, does attatching my dvd player to my tv (non - progressive scan panasonic 29") with component output make a big difference compared to composite connection bcoz the wires are pretty expensive.

yes...its best to use the same manufacturers speakers as centre and surround as they are timbre matched.

wharfedale in your case.
