What is a good entry level turntable to consider? A MM variety, at this point I suppose.

Hello krish,

Have you gotten anywhere with your search for an entry level turntable? There is an under $400 table, the Thorens 170 which is selling in Bombay for Rs 28000. Seems overpriced and looks boring. I am trying to find out about the NAD 533 which is basically a Rega P2. Am also trying to find out about the Project Debut. If the prices are not inflated this may be a deck to check. Will let you know if i come across anything.
As of now I am running my NAD 5120 with a Denon 110 MC. Set up is critical but the sound is really punchy and lively. Unfortunately this model isnt produced any more.
Let me know if you come across anything. One more thing dont sting on the cartridge. Buy a high out put moving coil rather than a moving magnet. The Denon 110 I have ($140) is really fantastic.

Hi,

ProJect Turntables are available with Nova Audio from Mumbai.

Debut II : @14,000/-
1 Xpression : not yet availble
RPM 4 :26,ooo without cartridge.
34,000 with Sumiko Pearl.

I recently purchased RPM 4 : it is a fantastic entry level turntable.Robust, beautifully made, rock-steady.
All alignment corrections are possible: VTA, Azimuth,
counter weight 3 to 7 gm.
Sounds really great with the typical analog warmth and palpability.

A word of caution: All ProJect entry level turntables come with unshielded AC motors. This, when combined with an unshielded cartridge, gives an audible disturbing hum.
This happens esp.with Grado cartridges...I am in a process to switch over from Grado Prestige Black to Shure M97XE.

Go for ProJect TTs, you won't repent.

Aniruddha.

Hi Anirudh,
Thanks for the info on the project turntables. I had sent novaudio an email earlier but they did not get back. I hope you are enjoying your TT- maybe some day me too. What are you standing it on, a wall shelf for something. Given that that in urban India, unlike Europe, wooden floors are uncommon, wall shelves arent really necessary. Our cement/ stone floors are good enough if the stand is a sturdy one.
By the way would you know any sources for purchasing record sleeves and record cleaning equiment such as a carbon brush. Where I live nothing is available, not even lint free cloth.
Enjoy

Hi Purnendu,

Yes, I am enjoying my turntable.I have placed it on a wooden shelf specially constructed for my hifi kit.
Thinking of building DIY sand-box and/or vibrapods thru' Prithviraj for isolation and vibration control. The rubber feet appear hardly adequate...

As for turntable accessories, I am still desparately searching for them.
Will let you know.

Hi Prithviraj,

This is really a great news! ( it was really foolish of me not to ask you beforehand...)

Can you send me the details about turntable accessories?

Aniruddha.

Hi Prithvi,
This is welcome news. Could you post me the prices of inners and carbon brush either here or on my email add. Do you also keep speaker cables? My wife and kids usually spend the summer in B.lore. It should not be a problem having the stuff collected.

Aniruddh,
You might want to try out my tweak before you get into a stand proper. If your wooden rack is solid enough, cut a strip of thermocol and lay it on top. Next, go to a chap who sells outdoor cement tiles (Not ceremic tiles). Get a few two or one and half inch thick cement bricks. Lay them on the foam strip and properly levelled. Place the TT on the bricks. This is enough isolation to make noticable difference to the sound of the table. You might want to try laying another foam strip and then glass on it. I havent tried it yet so I dont know if its better. One thing I should mention is that my TT is a suspended design unlike yours and this might make a difference. Tweak and enjoy. Half the fun of a TT is its toy-value.

Hi!
Hang in there as in two weeks you will get a fantastic isolation platform based on the cloud 9 from www.gingkoaudio.com but with some major mods.

My other client use his Rega P5 on an acrylic shelf that I made for him which is then supported by vibrapods.

I have a Project Debut III bought from Nova Audio. I am quite happy with it and would recommend it to anyone looking for an entry level TT.

Rega P2 is a great one too but is it available in India?

If all you need is an inexpensive TT, Denon DP29F is available for around 10K and comes with a built in phono.

Hi,
I dont know about the Sony.
If you do need to have an auto then Project do have some models. Its basically not a good idea to have too many gizmos in a TT. My Project Xpression is three years with no problems. Ran a Shure and a Denon on it. Have just mounted a ZYX Bloom. Perhaps the time has come to upgrade the TT !

If one wants to go for DD then technics is there.

Okay..It seems I might be getting a bit ahead of myself..

Decided to halve the budget on the turntable for a start.

This is what I am looking at currently

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ele/1361880810.html

An Empire 498 table..both the cartridges are supposed to be MM style.

For the phono stage i was planning on using my Sansui AU-217 integrated amp which has an inbuilt phono stage.

Future plans are however to build a Pass labs Pearl Phono stage or something of that sort.
