Purpose : Mostly music + Occasional movie

Option 1 : Marantz sr 5600 + Tannoy Mercury F4.
Any views on this combination? I do not have the additonal budget for an audiophile cd player. I'll use the digital output of my dvd player and use the DAC in the Marantz, which I am told, is pretty good.

Option 2:
Settle for a 2 channel movie experience for a much superior music experience (with a dedicated 2 channel Amp) but in which case I'm forced to get a good cd player as the amps do not have a digital input. The option here is to go for a NAD C352 with the Tannoy F4 and a Cambridge/Marantz CD player.

Any suggestions?

You are ina stereo forum...what do you expect the answer to be ?..
Your second option is really good.
Have you heard both the setups ?
IMO going for an higher end AVR, when you are not a bigtime movie buff makes no sense. Instead invest it in a good Stereo setup and enjoy glorious music and decent movie experience as well..
just my $2

Unfortunately I have not heard either combination. Will be trying though. How do the Tannoy F4 compare against similarly priced (around 40-50k) speakers? (did not see any messages discussing these). Also, any better recommendations (amp + speaker up to 75k)?

Hi Atharva !

I think NAD C352 + Tannoy F4 + Marantz CD-5001 should form a very good combination.

Regarding movies - 2 channel movies sound really good. Later you should add a separate 5.1 setup, someting like SR-4500 + Boston / Mordaunt Short / Wharfedale.

Abhi.Pani,
I am based in Pune.
I listen to all kind of music. English (Pop/Rock/Classical/Instrumental), Hindi and even Indian classical.
The room size is 18x14x8.5 but on one side it opens into the dining. So there is open space created on 1 side.
I checked out Sound Vision in Pune and they suggested the Tannony.

SDhawan,
Thanks for the input.

For the same combination, how does Tannoy compare with the Quad 21L, KEF Coda 90/IQ5, Acoustic Energy Evo 3, Wharfedale 9.1 and Monitor Audio RS5/RS6. Not sure about the prices though.

At ~ 50K I could consider the Cadence Arita too. However, the cost of the stands pushes the Arita much higher.

If your budget is so generous (>50,000) try Magnepan MG-12 flrs. Their midrange outclasses anything under a lakh. They are big speakers so you will have to be willing to sacrifice some of your room space. But the sound justifies the investment.

Kef iQ5 and MA RS-5/6 are worth a consideration any day.
Cadence with the stands are actually on the expensive side.
For that price you get Dali Ikon-6 which is terrific value for money for any kind of speakers.
If you can travel to Mumbai..look at Athena AS-f2.2.

I am just trying to suggest you something thats decent for almost any genre of music.

I am based in Pune.

Have you heard ACOUSTIC ART speakers ? They are made in Pune.

Though the fit and Finish may not be the best possible, they provide good sound and Value for money.

I think there is a Hi Fi Showroom off Bund Garden Road that carries these speakers and some others too.

If necessary, I can dig out the exact details of the showroom.

Have fun listning.

Thanks to you all for all the info. I am trying to listen to the options. I was told that the RS6 are great but the NAD C352 will not do justice to it and so I will need to up my budget for the amp as well.

Here is what I am considering for the < 1L price point.

Marantz 5001 + NAD C352 + Tannoy F4

The fact the no one seems to be talking about the Tannoy makes me nervous. Anyone got experience with these?

Amp_Nut, any info on the showroom for ACOUSTIC ART will be appreciated.

Dear Atharva,

I have recently auditioned Tannoy F2 and Reveal 6. I was quite impressed by them. So I think that F4 should be good too (infact better).

I own NAD C320BEE and Marantz CD-5001 - both are excellent products.

Please audition the combination that you have shortlisted with your own choice of music. And compare it with some other high-end products.

All the best.

Hi Atharva !

I have used NAD C521BEE in past and I found Marantz CD-5001 slightly better. I have no experience of C542.

Hi!

I`m quite surprised by your budget division. I own a pair of Tannoy Sensys 1, behind that I`m running a NAD 320 BEE plus 521 BEE. And thats really a great line up. But your are talking about the big brother concerning the amp, while considering at the same time a speaker, that is on entry level range.

That`s why I think, you should definitely change your plans into some better speakers. The Sensys 2 would be a great alternative. Put the rest of the money in the 320 BEE.
