Hi !

I am planning to buy a DVD player which I would mate with Marantz SR4500 AVR and Boston Speakers (7.1 configuration).

I intend to use it for watching movies and would also like to play SACD & DVD-A - if it makes sense to go for a player like that. Earlier I have used Pioneer DV-373.

I am considering Marantz DVD-6600 - because Marantz has an official showroom in Delhi & service support.

I will apperciate all your help.

Yeah maybe I would be looking for an entry level player as well like Doc's also but with a headphone out with volume control.

Any suggestions ?

Manek.

Has anyone any experience with Denon DVD Player DVD-1920 ? As per specifications & magazine reviews it is a great product. How does it compare with Marantz DV-6600 DVD player?

Has anyone seen Samsung DVD Player HD-950? It's a universal player -SACD & DVD-A with HDMI output and all the other frills. What Hi-Fi magazine speaks highly of this player which costs only Rs 8590 !!! See the website for details:

http://www.samsung.c...50.asp?page=Features

It will be a steal if this player comes anywhere close to be called being decent.

Hi !

I finally bought Denon DVD-1920 - Universal Player for Rs 28,500 from Cinebels.

First impressions - very good musically. Good for CD, DVD, Stereo SACD and good video & sound quality.

I have not tried DVD-A and I was not very impressed with multichannel SACD. I believe that the strength of SACD is in it's stereo format and not in 5.1.

What is this Universal DVDP anyway?

It is called so because
a)it can play DVD movies & Audio + SACD, or
b) It can play DVD Movies (of all region codes) & Audio + SACD.

Which one is it ???

Univeeral Player can play all 120 mm discs regardless of the format. So it plays DVD-V, DVD-A, CD, SACD, MP3, WMA, VCD, SVCD, Kodak Photo CD, etc.

It is region encoded although mine plays all regions.

To read the SACD layer it switches Laser, so there may be a delay of about 30 sec

Hi doc,

since i am making an HT from scratch as well I would be buying a DVDP too

I am looking at Marantz 6600 (Same as you), will get a price quote today.

Why did u choose the denon over the marantz, can you give specific details please :)?

Also, any other good players which i can get for cheaper? This HT is making a large hole in my pocket all too slowly!

Cheers

Take a look at OPPO DV 970- check out the review of this player by Wes Philips published in the May 2007 issue of Stereophile( the review is accessible in the web edn of the mag). List price of the player is US$ 149!

Hello Kamal,

I was told last weekend, that AVI offers the Oppo Player for Rs 20,000 ( + Taxes ??./ ) here in Mumbai.

Can anyone confirm ?

Could this be another case of a rip off mark up ?

The Marantz dvd 6600 was discontinued last year.
You now have the Marantz dvd 6001, which is also a universal player and upscales to 1080p.
You could get the same for about 20k in the grey market.

AmpN, it sure is a rip-off!
I got the Oppo DV 981HD( their latest model) a couple of days ago, courtesy my brother who brot it from the US-cost US$229.
It sure is a great player, plays literally anything; can't recommend it too highly, outstanding Audio performance too.
Am now looking for a decent interconnect....

Hi Kamal,

Interesting to know that you have experienced the Oppo personally.

How does the sound compare against a dedicated Audio player like the Cyrus ?

On second thoughts.... US $ 229 for hardware there, translating into Rs 20 K here is high, but not quite a 'Rip Off" like the 6X markup ventilated on this forum !

Hi AmpNut,
229$( i.e. less than Rs 9400 at the current exchange rate) is for their top/latest player, the DV981HD; the DV971 costs 199$ & the DV970 is just 149$ !
Your post does not specify which model is being offered here for 20,000 Rs.
I'm pretty happy with the capabilities so far.Am looking out for a decent interconnect to replace the stock standard one that came with the player-will put up a post about my experience thereafter.
In the meantime, if you're interested, look up Wes Philips' review of the Oppo in the May07 web edition of Stereophile, which was virtually only about the audio capabilities- that ,with other net reviews, is what clinched it for me,since I could'nt audition one locally.

I have both the oppo 981 & the 971 which I use strictly for DVD playback. IMHO the downmixed stereo from the RCA jacks of both these players cannot compare to stand alone CD players in the ($500 - $700) price range like the NAD C542. These sound thin, strident and flat dimensionally(comparatively speaking of-couse). Where they start sounding similar to mid and higher priced design is when they are used as transports with external DAC's. Also the 981 has HDMI multi channel connectivity which when connected to a reciever with the capability should trasmit all digital 5.1 surround (have not tried that yet). Also with the coax. digital connectivity, receivers with better DAC's should help the sound.
That being said these are the best up-conversion players on the market today. With the 971 upconverting to 720p on my Panasonic PTAE-900 projector projecting a 106" image, I am hard pressed to tell the difference between upconverted DVD's and broadcast 720p HD channels. The 981 also is similarly fantastic looking on my 1080p 50 inch sony LCD flat panel. So therein lies their strength. Another thing is their pricing is what makes them super attractive - but at 20k rs. (US$500) I think their value diminishes considerably.
