Listening to the album Here's to Life by the great Shirley Horn.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
A truly great album from this "Musician of Musicians".
There is'nt one bad track in the whole album ; you can listen to the title track again & again ( which I did) & every other track is a delight.
Shirley- like our very "own" Norah Jones sang while playing the piano. In this album she collaborated with the great composer & arranger Johnny Mandel & the results are there for all to hear.A huge part of the magic of this album is due to the wonderous orchestral arrangements. mandel has done for this album what Nelson Riddle used to do for Frank Sinatra.I'm giving a youtube link of the title track(cant figure out how to embed it in my post) so that you can get a flavor of this album.

Beethoven 5th by charles munch and boston symphony.

This version definately comes a close second to the one by carlos kleiber, my fav.

Superb work by the rca engineers then and now. I am enjoying this cd set thoroughly.

My first hearing of the dvorak cello concerto by piatigorsky was also amazing !

These old guys sure were and still are magical.

I whole heartedly recommend this set even though I have heard only a few cd's out of it.

It just reaffirms my belief that the best classical was recorded between the 50's and the 70's, ofcourse that's my view.

For all you jimmy smith fans....there is a new double album cd release "respect", "livin it up".

His treatment of theme of "mission impossible" and "mercy, mercy, mercy" is exceptional.
Not to forget "the gentle rain".
Truely path breaking, definately the master of the organ.

The liner notes say that the original masters didn't survive but this surely depicts one of Mr. Smiths finer moments.

The Faces -- Ooh La La

(The only gem I could find at Landmark Phoenix Oh, and they now have a vinyl "section" that drew rather disappointing comments from visitors -- my personal favourite: "(in genuine amazement after very long silence)...What are these?". Also, the occasional comment on how you get it all on iTunes or your iPod is all you need...)

This site uses standard bbcode markup so I use that instead of the toolbar. I could not understand the german instructions either. So I do it manually as follows:

Just remove the space after 'img' in the above example

YELLO:

The ambitious Swiss electronic duo Yello comprised vocalist/conceptualist Dieter Meier -- a millionaire industrialist, professional gambler, and member of Switzerland's national golf team -- and composer/arranger Boris Blank. Meier, a former solo artist who also spent time with the group Fresh Colour, began collaborating with Blank in 1979, and the duo bowed with the single "I.T. Splash." After signing with the Residents' label, Ralph Records, Yello issued their 1980 debut LP, Solid Pleasure, which spawned the dance hit "Bostitch."

With 1981's Claro Que Si, Yello made its first forays into music video; their clip for the single "Pinball Cha Cha," directed by Meier, garnered considerable acclaim and in 1985 was selected as one of 32 works included in the Museum of Modern Art's Music Video Exhibition. Visual accompaniment remained a pivotal component of the duo's work after they signed to Elektra in 1983 for the LP You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess, as the videos for "I Love You" and "Lost and Found" received heavy airplay on MTV.

1985's Stella proved to be Yello's commercial breakthrough: while the singles and videos "Desire" and "Vicious Games" found success upon their initial release, the duo enjoyed a delayed hit with the album track "Oh Yeah," which reached the U.S. singles chart after being prominently featured in the films Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Secret of My Success. After the remix project 1980-1985: The New Mix in Go, Yello recruited diva Shirley Bassey and ex-Associate Billy McKenzie for 1987's One Second.

Despite the success of 1988's Flag, which contained the international hit "The Race," over the course of the next several years Yello grew increasingly involved with film projects: after scoring the comedy Nuns on the Run, Meier directed his own feature, 1990's Snowball. In 1991, the duo resurfaced with Baby, followed three years later by Zebra. 1995's Hands on Yello compiled reinterpretations of the group's songs by the likes of Moby, the Orb, and the Grid, while Pocket Universe, a collection of new material, appeared in 1997.

OUT OF PHASE SPEAKERS

This post is a little different... Its not about which Music I am playing but HOW I am playing it.

Getting a bit naughty, and over the last 1 month have been 'fooling around' with reversing the Phase of some section (s) of my speakers, with very interesting results.

I have a pair of REVEL Ultima Salon Speakers

These are Huge 4 Way speakers sitting in a small room in my home. The speakers have separate electrical terminations for the Low Freq (LF) and High Freq (HF) sections.

A Couple of nights ago, while listening to YELLO, I reversed the Phase of 1 speaker's HF section.

(YELLO is probably best described as Electronic pop. Its extensively doctored electronically, and also had a Lot of Electronic/ synth sounds)

The Soundstage changed Radically. The Voices shifted from the centre to the Top Left and Top right corners of the room, as it I had a Home Theatre setup.

Since the LF was still in phase, the Centre Image was stable, belting out Bass, thus creating an interesting illusion.

Anyone else tried this ?

Do post.

got some time during the day to listen to some music after a long time. Played
* Steve Ray Vaughn "The Sky Is Crying"
* Willie & Lobo "Gypsy Boogaloo"
* Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers "Greatest Hits"
* Steely Dan "Greatest Hits"

I can confidently say that listening to music in the night after 10PM is a soul-lifting experience compared to listening during the day. It must be the quality of the AC power (which sucks during the day!! ).....
