Hello All,

I (and a very small population of Mumbai) was thick into the "Concert Season" of the Symphony Orchestra of India... thus its just Classical music for me the past three weeks.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.5

Beethoven - Pastoral - Symphony No.6

Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.2

Rachmaninoff - Preludes for solo piano (The finest hour of piano music for me as a composition. However, the world considers "Beethoven's Diabelli variations" as that)

Cheers

Right now, I'm hooked non-stop to tracks from the new Kannada movie..'Mungaaru Male' (Monsoon Rains)

To me, the 'feel' and 'closeness' I get from the songs (especially with lyrics and music being very good) in my mother tongue always supersedes others..

Oh..,btw the movie is simple and awesome

Hi !

Carmina Burana composed by Carl Orff is great. I have the version played by Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas (CBS Records Masterworks).

A must have for lovers of Western Classical Music.

Carl Orff was a German composer born in Munich in 1895 and died in 1982.

Hi Switch-it-on,
What is this Symphony of India. Do they have a site, have they any recordings. Who's is the Conductor. The pieces you mention are quite ambitious ones. Would love to know more about them. Its hard to believe though that India could ever have a real symphony orchestra.

Selections of Connie Francis
Dido - Life for Rent

Nothing like female singers to brighten up a Sunday.
And for weekdays, there's always classical

BTW, I attended a show conducted by the Madras Chamber Orchestra at the Russian Cultural Centre a month ago. A committed group of senior artistes who gave a mix of solos and group performances.

Might attend an accordion show the coming week by a French duo

Kamal,

Svatoslav Richter is one of my fave pianists

A very momorable ensemble is David Oistrakh, Svatoslav Richter, Rostropovitch on Beethoven's triple concerto...one of the few times masters come together and make a brilliant music.

BTW Rostropovitch passed away a few days back. Good bless his soul. I am glad I could see/hear him the last time he came to bombay and performed at NCPA. A dream come true it was.

I have a "Now watching" item to share - I recently saw John Scofield in concert. He played with his trio. A superb artist known for his rock-Jazz tunes.

John Scofield Bio

The opening act was the local college's Jazz Ensemble, which was a Jazz big band. Many of the students there were 1st & 2nd year students but man, were they good or what! I was stunned to learn that they were just 1st & 2nd year students - they were that good!!

Tomorrow, if all going well, I will be going to see Spyro Gyra in concert. I have several of their LPs & a Best of CD as well. The plan is to take this Best of CD along & see if I can get it autographed from Jay Beckenstein himself
